Nokia c3 Game Crosspix

It's funny. When you're at school, you barely register grids and numbers. You have a dim notion that they're somehow involved in mathematics, possibly geography, but they're approximately as relevant to you as long division, the water table, and the word 'conjugate'.

Then, a few years later, somebody leaves a sudoku puzzle half-finished on a train, you take a look, trace your finger along the lines, a little bell rings, and suddenly you can't get enough.

Crosspix – a game popularised by Picross on the DS and entitled Tsunami in its paper form – is what mathematics should have been like at school, and a more accessible answer to sudoku.

For those who don't know, it works like this: You have a blank grid of, say, 10x10 squares. As in Minesweeper, the squares either conceal something or they don't, and it's your task to work out which are which using the numbers the game sparingly supplies.

Whereas Minesweeper places these numbers within the board, however, Crosspix lines them up outside it, above and to the left of each column and row, so that if 4, 6, 2 is provided beside a row there will be a line of four, then six, then two filled squares, in that order, each separated by at least one unfilled square.

If the grid is ten across and the number given is 10, easy. You just fill in every square in that line. If the 10 fills a row, then you know where at least one of the squares in each of the perpendicular columns that make it up belongs, and from those you can usually deduce the locations of a few more filled squares. And so on until you've got yourself a picture.

Nokia c3 Game Crash Bandicoot Mutant Island

Mobile gamers will be interested to know that Crash is returning with another 2D side-scroller, Mutant Island. The game is being developed by Glu Mobile and it doesn’t look that different from the mobile version of Crash of the Titans. Mutant Island appears to be the latest in the line of mobile 2D Crash sidescrollers. Crash will retain his ability to control large mutants and harness their powers to progress. Platforming will be present and Crash will venture through different worlds, some of which can be seen in the screenshots above (a castle, a dungeon and a big ol’ tree, respectively). And the rest is speculation.

Nokia c3 Game The Oregon Trail Gold rush

Oregon Trail is an update of the classic Radio Shack TRS-80 staple, albeit with modern graphics replacing the antiquated text-based visuals. The goal of this gold rush-era game is to get your family’s wagon from the Mississippi river to the West Coast. It essentially comes down to resource management. For instance, push too hard and your wagon is more likely to break down, but go too slow and you won’t make it to Oregon before the extremely harsh winter. While the original had vague historical highlights, the revamp has you meeting specific figures like General Custer and Mark Twain – often done as colorful, colloquial characters. The timely dialog and resource balancing is broken up by minigames to, say, fix your wagon or catch fish to eat. The most entertaining is hunting, specifically buffalo, as the herd runs towards you and requires quick decision making – a much needed adrenaline boost inOregon Trail . There is a sharp, almost sarcastic humor throughout the game, giving it a smart edge, but I couldn’t help but feel bored after the fourth river crossing or the eighth time the wagon had to be prepared. The control scheme also has flaws – hunting in particular requires an anally-retentive preciseness that was both frustrating and unnecessary. The slow pace, detailed planning and long adventure definitely convey the heaviness of the original Oregon Trail , though playing it again may take away some of the shine of our memories of the classic.

Nokia c3 Game Gish Reloaded

Gish is one of those enticing indie titles that’s made its way to cult fandom, which is probably good and bad from a sales perspective. The mainstream audience probably hasn’t heard of the eponymous blob of tar, and therefore won’t get too excited to hear a second game has now appeared on mobile.

Followers of the blob, however, will find this to be particularly exhilarating news, and will be clearing out memory on their mobile phones to make way for the sticky hero already.

With his babies (if a moving puddle of tar can have such things) kidnapped and taken deep into the sewers, it’s up to you to take control of the amorphous hero and find his gelatinous offspring. This is something of a flimsy pretext for dropping Gish into a wide range of underground tunnels where he can practice his wall-clinging, liquid-sliding art, but it’s probably not all that important as to why he’s doing what he’s doing – it’s the physics of the whole thing that we enjoy.

Gish, you see, isn’t a blob of goo for no reason. His talents include squeezing through the tiniest of gaps and defying gravity in slug-like fashion. He’s much faster than a slug, mind you, but essentially he can use his semi-solid state to cling to sheer walls and ceiling. It’s this ability that you’ll put to the test, as the majority of the subterranean levels are based around solving the environmental enigmas Gish is faced with.

Usually this is a logistic conundrum, with you needing to fathom a clever way to get across a room full of spikes, or through some difficult-to-reach and very narrow gaps in the floors and walls. And this is no bad thing, since climbing the scenery and squeezing through pin-holes are what’s especially entertaining about Gish, and Reloaded was clearly designed to give us more of what we wanted.

A surprising new addition to the game is the inclusion of Bluetooth multiplayer, which isn’t a feature very many mobile games have ever properly explored. What’s particularly nice about this multiplayer action is that well over 20 levels are included specifically for the two-player games, adding puzzles that need two blobs of goo rather than just one, and giving the game an extra boost of life should you fancy a game with mates.

All in all this adds up to the slick and entertaining experience we’ve come to expect from Gish, and if any criticism can be levelled at the game, it’s the slight lack of imagination in its environments. It’d be nice to see Gish spread his horizons a bit and visit some more interesting places. It’s easy to see why the developer chose a sewer, given the winding tunnels and good supply of narrow spaces and low ceilings, but it’s not the most interesting of locations.

Still, this is still Gish through and through, and considering the excellent Bluetooth multiplayer and decent gameplay time, this is a must-have for fans of the series and a great place for newcomers to slide onboard.

Nokia c3 Game SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs

SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs: Mobile Recon, a collaborative effort between SCEA, Jamdat Mobile, and developer Ironmonkey Studios, is almost ready for its mid-October release--hopefully around SOCOM 3's October 11 street date. Because that's still a way off, Jamdat delivered a final version of the game to us for some more hands-on time. After playing a little more into this stylish tactical shooter, we're considering it time well spent.

In SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs: Mobile Recon, you control an advance team of two SEALs running preliminary recon for a larger mission in Morocco (it just so happens that mission takes place in SOCOM 3). A nasty insurgency is plotting the government's overthrow, and it's up to your smarts and gunplay to repel the tide. The leader of the mission is Wraith, who's handy with his sniper rifle and a knife, and his subordinate is Bronco, who prefers blowing stuff up with grenades and C4.

Wraith and Bronco: killing machines and best buddies.

It's the perfect tandem of quiet and loud, and you'll need both approaches to do well in Mobile Recon. You're always controlling Wraith, but you can give orders to Bronco via a menu accessed with the right soft key. These orders include move, attack, open doors, use a grenade, and follow. Wraith, on the other hand, can go into a menu and choose sniper mode, which switches the screen to targeting mode. In this mode, the background grays out a little and a reticle appears, hovering over your line of sight; you can use one of your limited number of sniper bullets to assassinate a baddie from a distance, preferably with a headshot. Both sniper bullets and grenades can be replenished with pickups on each of the game's eight levels. Wraith can also knife terrorists from the shadows, if he gets close enough without their noticing.
The objectives don't deviate far from those found in similar games, like Gameloft's Rainbow Six: Lockdown--you've got your informant finding, your hostage rescues, your snatch operations, and even a level where you provide fire support from the back of a truck. Nevertheless, the core gameplay is a lot of fun, even if the levels are pretty linear. You'll have to learn to run from shadow to shadow to evade guards, position Bronco in the right spots to provide covering fire, and, on the later levels, conserve your sniper bullets. The game rates your performance on each level using a five-star scale, so there's reason to polish your skills to a fine sheen.

Morocco looks great!
We appreciate Mobile Recon's many little design touches--stuff that isn't strictly necessary for gameplay but that makes everything feel a lot smoother. For instance, the cursor that you use to click around the screen is probably the best we've ever encountered. It feels almost like you're using a PC mouse, and it has lots of contextual animation to tell you what you're focusing on at any given time. The animation is also great. The backgrounds are alive with birds pecking on the dirt roads and laundry flapping in the breeze, and when Wraith knifes an enemy, you can see him brandish the blade for a moment before he plunges it in. Jamdat has also put in a fair amount of digitized voice, mostly for Bronco's acknowledgement of your orders.

We enjoyed our preview time with Wraith and Bronco, and we're looking forward to conducting a full review of SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs: Mobile Recon in early October. Check back then to see how the game stacks up against the competition.

Nokia c3 Game Contra 4

Konami's Contra series is known for a number of things -- but foremost, gamers recognize the classic side-scroller action franchise for being hard. Thumb-numbingly hard. Contra 4 for mobile, released in conjunction with a brand new adventure of the same name on the Nintendo DS, does not break from tradition. This little shooter is mean to the core and if you don't mind spitting out paint-peeling obscenities, you will find a smartly, fine-tuned throwback challenge here.

Contra 4 returns Bill Rizer to the front lines against the alien menace, but this time he's joined by Solomon Caesar, a mobile-exclusive character that was conceived by Stephen Hetrick. (Konami ran a very cool create-a-character contest for Contra 4 on mobile, asking fans to submit hero designs and clever back-stories.) Bill and Solomon must push through seven stages filled with alien nasties, from basic shock troops to screen-filling bosses.

The game mechanics are pure Contra. You run from left to right and blast everything. Incoming troops, floating satellites, wall turrets, winged creeps -- you name it and this game is going to throw it at you. However, while Contra 4 may be a little mean (and I'd be disappointed if it wasn't because that's part of the Contra essence), it isn't merciless to the point it's just un-fun. The pacing of the enemies is challenging and you will replay stages until you somewhat memorize patterns, but it doesn't stack bad guys to the point you only get an extra three feet with each attempt.

Bill and Solomon get a nice arsenal of five weapons and a little gear to survive the threat. They start out with basic machineguns, but power-ups unlock extra firepower, such as a spread gun that sprays the screen and a fireball gun that broils enemies with explosive shells. Having a souped-up weapon is important when closing in on the giant bosses, like the tank. If you're shot (the Contra universe doesn't believe in health bars -- one bullet and you're face down in the mud) and are busted back down to a machinegun, surviving a boss encounter can be a tricky thing.

The heroes also come factory standard with grappling guns that pull them up the screen. Look for an eagle emblem overhead when it's time to use the grappling gun and pull yourself out of trouble -- and, rather, into a different kind of trouble. The grappling gun lets Konami give the stages a vertical element which is a nice addition from past efforts loaded with strict side-scrolling.

If you're intimate with your phone's controls, you shouldn't have too much trouble getting into the rhythm of Contra 4. Konami sent me the game on an LG VX9400 (a very nice handset) but since I'm hardly an expert with the phone, I had to find my comfort zone.

The game looks great. I have only seen screenshots of the DS edition of Contra 4, and while Contra 4 isn't an exact duplicate, it certain is close enough to throw rocks. The characters are solidly animated, the backdrops are detailed with great color, and every moves along smoothly. Contra fans will instantly recognize that the game fits in the overall Contra aesthetic, if there is such a thing. It really is a handsome
game.

Nokia c3 Game Mega Man 3

As with his previous adventures, Mega Man must strike out against Dr. Wily and his rogues gallery of robot masters. Each robot master has a catchy theme, such as Snake Man and Shadow Man. After rushing through a multi-screen level of platforming and shooting, Mega Man must defeat the boss robot and claim its weapon. Mega Man can then use this weapon against the other robot masters. The weapons operate on a rock-paper-scissors plane. One weapon is particularly good against a specific boss robot, so depending on which robot master you beat first (it's your choice), you move through the different stages in different orders.

Mega Man is also joined by a robot dog named Rush that helps him jump. This is the first game is the series to feature Rush, and the canine went on to be a permanent companion to help with jumping and other tasks. Mega Man 3 also marks the introduction of the slide maneuver, used to slip through trouble spots.

Mega Man 3 is a precision platformer, requiring a steady hand when jumping through the air or targeting robot enemies. As expected, that is not always possible on a cellphone since the number pad or D-pad is not conducive to twitch gaming. Still, Mega Man 3 is entirely playable. And the addition of a save feature is welcomed.

The production vales are commendable. The game really goes look like the NES classic and the music sounds just as good as it did back in the eighties. If you are an 8-bit fan, this is a great representation of the era for your mobile phone

Nokia c3 Game Surf's Up

You can't deny penguins have been enjoying a lot of exposure recently. Documentary March of the Penguinskicked off the procession and was followed by animated films Happy Feetand, most recently, Surf's Up.

What's with the fascination? Well, it could have something to do with their smooth, blubbery bodies, fat little wings that look like stumpy arms and Charlie Chaplin waddle. They also seem to be having a good time, sliding around the ice on their bellies and swimming about in the water (assuming there are no sea lions, sharks or killer whales about, of course). And their ball-of-fluff babies are like cuddly, uncoordinated candyfloss.

Essentially, whether in adult of chick form, they've got more cute appeal than Bambi and Babe rolled into one.

Surf's Up puts you into the flippery feet of Cody, a multi-talented penguin good at everything you'd expect – sliding around on the ice, dodging walruses and swimming underwater – as well as one thing you wouldn't necessarily associate with an arctic flightless bird: surfing.

Levels alternate between being on land, underwater and atop a surfboard: the latter requiring you to pull off stunts off ramps and dodge rogue pieces of driftwood. It's a nice mix of action, with the land sections more typical of your average platformer, centred around skillful jumping and working out how to reach new areas, and the surfing more reaction-based, like an on-rails penguin racer.

Underwater events, on the other hand, are slower and floatier – even relaxing, were it not for the angry fish, dangerous jellyfish and formations of spiky creatures that get in your way. With only three hearts to lose and one gone for every bad encounter with an enemy, you need to take things easy or risk being penguin-punched back to the last checkpoint.

At least these checkpoints are well placed – there's normally one thoughtfully included just before a tricky section. Yet, despite these and the relative shortness of the levels, Surf's Up remains a challenging game (especially if attempted on the higher difficulty levels, of which there are three).

Easing your stress levels are the humourous Antarctica-based props and characters that appear throughout the game. For instance, walruses poke their heads out of ice holes for you to jump up and down on to gain extra height. (Sometimes they go for a little wander out of their holes and need stunning before being kicked back into place.)

There are also icy curves and ramps, which can be slid along to get up enough speed to clear gaps. Or there are even enemies you can ride, such as a circus elephant balancing on a barrel, which has the added benefit of squashing any preying creatures as you roll.

More creatures unrelated to the South Pole pop up too. There are, erm, chickens flying about, which you can jump to grap hold of, then repeatedly press '5' to fly higher.

As an added challenge, you have shells to collect as you go – every 100 p-p-p-picked up awards you an extra life. And if that's not enough, the letters 'S-U-R-F' are hidden on each level – finding them unlocks a bonus level to play.

Aside from the accomplished content, Surf's Up is an extremely polished game that looks pleasingly close to the film it's related to. The backdrops are colourful and very pretty, while the characters are well animated. But don't let docile appearances fool you. For one, you're certainly kept on your webbed toes by obstacles that constantly evolve and the new ideas introduced in nearly every level.

Some underwater segments, for example, see you cling to a squid and ride it like a jet engine, cutting through the water at speed and knocking fish into a dizzying spin. Meanwhile, glaciers can be brought down to form bridges or just used to glide across the ice at a penguin land speed record-breaking pace. New objectives at the start of each level give you varying goals, such as surfing levels where you have to out-surf an opponent.

There are disappointments, though. The bonus mini-games you unlock turn out not to be much different to a regular shortened level, albeit with lots of shells. Which means replaying levels to try and collect all their hidden letters is more a test of commitment than something you'll want to do to obtain the mini-games.

Even so, Surf's Up is highly entertaining and more challenging than you might expect. Every level offers something new and the game gives you a variation of action with its mix of platforming and surfing sections. Kicking crabs along the ice and slip-sliding at top speed through levels (which remind us of the ice levels of the PSP's LocoRoco) never fails to raise a smile.

They might traditionally have been popular because they're cute, but there's clearly more to penguins than just blubbery appeal. Turns out all you need to unlock their fun side is hand them a surfboard.
